What is Diabetic
Peripheral Neuropathy?
As of 2024, approximately 30 million people in the United States are affected by some form of neuropathy, including peripheral neuropathy. This condition leads to symptoms such as pain, tingling, or weakness in the feet and legs. The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy remains high among those with diabetes, impacting a significant portion of the diabetic population.
Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) is nerve damage caused by diabetes.
It usually starts with numbness or tingling in the feet and legs and can progress to muscle weakness, burning or stabbing pain, and eventual loss of sensation. For many patients, DPN pain is worse at night, which can make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep.
Chronic pain from DPN can interfere with daily activities, including sleep.
Moderate-to-severe DPN pain is often treated by managing glucose levels and taking pain medication, either prescription or over-the-counter. But medication is often not enough to control pain for many who suffer from DPN, and taking pain medication can have serious side effects.
This new study may be a good fit for individuals who:
Experience pain in the legs or feet
Have had DPN pain for at least a year
Have not had success managing DPN pain with their current treatment
Have DPN pain that negatively impacts sleep and quality of life
